Valves are new

 Allen-Sherman-Hoff's Type "E" Material Handling Valve is a feeding device for vacuum conveying systems. The valve feeds fly ash from hopper outlets of electrostatic precipitators, baghouses, economizers or other ash collecting systems into a conveying line. The slide gate design provides a positive gate and seat seal. The valve has two access points for easy maintenance and accessibility. The operating mechanism is an air-electric, remote operated cylinder.

The A-S-H Type “E” Material Handling
Valve uniformly feeds fly ash into
a dilute phase, vacuum conveying
system. The valve design allows all
fly ash contained in a hopper to
self-regulate into the conveying line.
The valve then closes and the cycle
repeats on the next valve in the line.
Typically, these valves are used at
the hopper outlet of electrostatic
precipitators, baghouses, economizers,
or other fly ash collecting systems.
Type E valves are available in either
a right- or lefthand orientation.
Appropriate selection is vital to prevent
cylinder interference with discharge
piping. Valve inlet can be supplied
either centerline or straddle centerline
depending on the hopper outlet flange
Slide Gate Housing Assembly
The stainless steel slide gate isolates
the vacuum conveying system from
the storage hopper. The slide gate
is machine finished to ensure a flat
seating surface which reduces the
tendency of damp material to adhere
to the gate, and has sharp edges to
scrape off material adhering to the seat
face or guide tracks. It floats between
the seat and guide tracks, on a stainless
steel drive pin, so that the vacuum off
the transport line pulls the slide gate
tightly against the seat. The valve seat is
made of hardened ductile iron, giving
it both low friction qualities of nodular
iron and desired wear resistance of
high Brinell metal.
The cast iron body design eliminates
cavities or dead spaces at each end
of the slide range. This reduces the
tendency to trap ash or dust that can
cake and prevent a full stroke of the
slide gate. The body is cast in two
pieces that are flanged together, to
accommodate customers’ inlet and
configuration needs and reduce
replacement cost.
Air Inlet Check Valves
Cast iron valves are upstream of the
slide gate assembly, at each side of the
outlet. They assist in reducing buildup
of material in the slide path due to the
high velocity air flow between the valves
and the transport line. By admitting
controlled amounts of transport air at
the point of material pickup, the feed
rate is continuous and commensurate
with the system’s capacity. A tension
spring allows for field adjustment of the
feed rate without overloading.
Inlet and Outlet Sizes
Valve bodies are available in various
combinations of inlet and outlet sizes to
suit customer needs and applications.
The inlet is available with an 8” (203
mm) or 12” (305 mm) flange and the
outlet with a 4” (102 mm), 5” (127
mm) or 6” (152 mm) plain end piece
which connects by a coupling to our
standard, plain end pipe or fittings.
Maintenance Accessibility
The valve has two access points:
a threaded port in the base of the body
directly beneath the inlet; and a bolted
access cover at the rear of the body,
opposite the outlet. The threaded port
acts as a drain when rinsing hoppers
during planned outages. The rear
access cover enables removal of tramp
iron or lumped material in the event of
valve pluggage.
Operating Mechanism
The standard operating mechanism is an
air-electric, remote operated cylinder. This
consists of a double acting air-cylinder,
designed for air pressures between 80-
125 psi (5.6-8.8 kg/cm
) and a 4-way
solenoid control valve with manual
override. The manual override permits
local operation of the valve. An open-
bottomed adaptor section connects the
cylinder to the valve body, thus isolating
the cylinder from problems associated
with dust and
flue gas. Manually operated
are also available to fulfill
customer needs.
Gate and Seat Replacements and Upgrades
Three readily interchangeable “Maintenance Kit” options are available
to suit customers’ varying wear and budget requirements. Each kit
includes all the typical parts needed to replace in-kind, or upgrade your
gate and seat, thus ensuring ease of substitution.
• Stainless
These materials are our
standard offering. They display excellent life and wear characteristics
on most fly ash applications.
• Ceramic
We recommend this product for highly abrasive ash
handling applications. The benefits of ceramics include excellent
abrasion and impact resistance, as well as the capability to
withstand high temperatures. The carbon steel gate has a
ceramic overlay. The seat is machined to incorporate the
ceramic inlay.
• Tungsten
This product offers improved wear resistance over
our standard offering. The Tungsten Carbide gate is machine finished
to reduce ash adherence. The seat has a Tungsten Carbide sleeve
and ring. The ring is adhered to the inlet side.
Deflector Tubes
This option increases the life of the gate
and seat. It is essentially a sacrificial
part inserted inside the valve body to
deflect ash from the gate and seat.
This low cost product is recommended
when optimal system capacity is
not required. The tube is made of
zcast iron.
Metering Sleeves
This product controls the flow rate of
very fluid ashes through the valve. The
valve body houses the sleeve that is
adjustable by an external lever to meter
the throughput.
